Stuart0742
No but I take a guess at 1914/18 HD Honest I knew it anyway http://www.multimap.com/maps/?qs=totley&countryCode=GB#map=53.31454,-1.55231|19|256&be=7744238|West&bd=useful_information&loc=GB:53.31463:-1.55099:19|totley|
hilldweller
Blimey that was quick HD, well done! and I suppose you will know the approximate year that the photo was taken ? Those grating things over the top of the shafts are a dead give-away. The one visible from Stoney Ridge Road is identical. I understand that there were other shafts at the Totley end to facilitate construction but they disappeared when the cutting was made. It's well known of course that the then landowner, The Duke of Rutland, wouldn't let them have any other air-shafts mid tunnel in case the smoke and noise disturbed his grouse. Of course these were much more important than the choking engine drivers ! HD
SteveHB
I know, I will send you a PM Steve Nice to see our largest topic back I thought you would know the answer Stuart, the air shaft was the give away. Isn't that number 4 shaft of the tunnel? No but I take a guess at 1914/18 HD Yes it says 1915 on the back of the photo, looks to have been taken from Baslow Road. bottom image from Google SV

vox
Here's one. Not a mystery location, but a mystery lamp. There are the remains of what were lights on the four corners of Hillfoot Bridge. Can anyone come up with a picture of the complete fitting ? I've found just one and not a very good one at that. A tiny glimpse on Picture Sheffield. Also. Whilst looking around there I discovered what (I assume) used to be in the circular recesses in the bridge corner pillars. Does anyone else know what was in them ? Edit: I've just been looking for the Picture Sheffield photo that I found. I can't find it now. Only a few showing the base and stem like this. Picture Sheffield - Hillfoot Bridge Somewhere on there is the complete lamp but where ?

vox
Her's the one I couldn't find earlier on Picture Sheffield. Just a tiny glimpse in the right hand corner. Unfortunately the larger image has been removed for some reason. A better picture still required.
SteveHB
No - I meant Brilliant - as in "Funnier than a very funny thing". I know .. But it would not have been right not to post the proper photo. *The Lamps on Hillfoot were contributed by the proprietors of the nearby Neepsend Gasworks in about 1912, link to SH Topic .. Unfortunately the larger image has been removed for some reason. A better picture still required. The picture Sheffield image won't let you use the zoom so it looks very indistinct at the right hand edge. It is, as you say vox, just a glimpse. ..and to be fair, from what can be seen of it, it doesn't look that much different to Steve's "brilliant" picture. I know where there is a good photo of Hillfoot Bridge, sorry no lamps, but could that be something set into the bridge corner pillar? vox
I know where there is a good photo of Hillfoot Bridge, sorry no lamps, but could that be something set into the bridge corner pillar? SH link to Parkwood Springs Yes there's something there alright. Not sure it looks like what I had in mind though. The reason I think/thought I may know is that when I was there last I went round the back to get a photo from the river side. The circular indents are present on that side but they still have something in them. I'm assuming (not usually a good idea) that they were the same. I can't find those photos. I'll take some more. vox
Also - The picture Sheff with the lamp still there is 1920's There are 1940's ones with the lamps gone, so they were removed sometime between those years.

That's what I thought they were Stuart. I wonder why (and where) the others have gone. Just a picture of the original lamps to find now. - Not so quick now I bet.
