Mystery Location

What is/was this and where is it ?

It is a heavy stone slab which has had something attached to it.

Do you want us to identify the object which was initially attached to it?

..and would this object help us identify the required location?

Your questions are little difficult to answer Dave, but I will do my best.

I know what once stood on the stone, but I do not know what it looked like.

There were more of these in other areas that served the same purpose.

This one has a lot more to go with it, dates, some history, names and even an address,

are also shown on the plinth.

So it's a stone plinth with what appear to circular section columns in what appears to be a decorative red basalt at each corner. Could it have been something like a drinking fountain or a pump base with a canopy over the top. That would explain the hole in the centre of the plinth.

hilldweller has answered one question,

it should help to locate it.

Yes it was a drinking fountain hilldweller.

Weston Park. (?)

Well if it wasn't Weston Park which contained what looks like a identical fountain then it probably was located in another similar park. My guess would be High Hazels park which was also designed by Robert Marnock.

Sorry to say, but your guess is wrong hilldweller

Don't overlook the fact that this structure is still standing.

Another wild guess.

Sheffield General Cemetery

It's the only place I can think of in Sheffield where it wouldn't stand out like a sore thumb.

No, it is not in the General Cemetery hilldweller.

It can be seen on the 1950's OS maps,

and the 'DFn' dates back to 1891

That's Not a Guess, It is The Correct Answer!

Well done Richard,

I will post up more details/photos in the morn.

Also as a consolation prize,

hilldweller will be receiving a packet of Worther's Originals,

for his contributions that lead to the correct answer.

Complete fluke !

Here's the method :

Look at picture - think it's a drinking fountain base, confirmed by Hillcweller

Search PictureSheffield for drinking fountains (hence Weston Park and the picture I posted)

You mentioned 1891

Google search as below

"drinking fountain" sheffield 1891

Can I ask that my cyberspace Worther's Originals be of the non-fattening low calorie variety ?

I had a nasty experience in my bathroom the other day !

I stepped out of the shower and caught my reflection in the mirror on the window sill. With horror I realised that I had a bigger chest than Katie Price. It took me several minutes to figure out that my wife had turned the mirror round to clean it and I was looking at the magnifying side of the mirror.

The situation was not as quite as bad as I first thought but man-boobs of any size aren't a good look and I must try and get rid of a bit of weight.

Exercise is difficult with my leg problems and my wife being such a good cook doesn't help. I did think of trying some sitting type exercises with weights, but I'd probably end up with arms like Bluto and still weigh the same.

Still at my age there's worse things than looking like a barrel on legs. Probably.

I resemble those remarks, however, I have lost 12 pounds on Doctors orders and look forward to weighing 7 stone by Christmas ... probably ... which is nice ...

An easy one this.

Where is this and what is it?

I must admit to not knowing what it is, or what it is/was used for.

(no idea if there are more than one of these)

It's a section box from the original tramway system. Within it would have been an open knife switch ( think Boris Karloff ). It's purpose was to connect a section of overhead catenary wiring to the feeder cable from the substation. The linesmen would use it to isolate sections of overhead when repairs were needed. Would you want to reach inside an iron box containing exposed metalwork at 650 volts DC on a wet evening ?, I wouldn't.

The logo stands for Sheffield Corporation Tramways.
