  2. I would bet that everyone on here would agree with you, to me it;s as bad as chucking a brick through a window, it's a crime and should be dealt with as such.

  13. I’ve been looking into the Prudential Assurance Building on the corner of Pinstone Street & St Paul’s Parade, by all accounts the lower floor was originally rented out to a Mr Bird as a restaurant but was given his marching orders after failing to pay his rent, the entrance to Mr Birds establishment was what is now the entrance to the Costa coffee shop. I do know that the building does have the oldest lift in Sheffield, if you have any information on the building or the Prudential Assurance company, it would be a great help to me.

  14. Vaguely remember going in when I moved to Pitsmoor in 80s. There were quite a few shop's in West bar I enjoyed going to. Second hand shops, another one that sold air rifles and stuff. Not forgetting that fairly famous kebab shop.

  16. I remember Ratners on Fargate, and the almost overnight collapse after his comments on how they can sell a cut glass decanter with glasses on a silver plate tray for about £5 - which even in 1991 wasn’t a fortune 😂 I remember thinking then - and still do now to a degree about the real quality of all the other jewellery shops out there...

  17. It looks like they were known as the ‘Roman Baths’ in these photos from the late 60’s? https://www.picturesheffield.com/frontend.php?searchterms=Roman_baths&action=search&keywords=all%3BCONTAINS%3B%Roman_baths%%3B Wonder what the caravans we’re doing there? Maybe accommodation for builders on the Vic Hallam estate below, on and around Dyke Vale and Scowerdons?

  19. Sheffield High Street in 1908 Main change is that the big white building on the left where the Star Newspaper used to be. Therefore we need to try and find out what the buildings on the left hand side were, what businesses were there etc Anyone know?

  20. I agree entirely Unitedite Returns , I find it strange that people insist on calling Birley Spa a Roman baths just because there is the possibility / likelihood that the Romans were there. I know there were Roman finds about half a mile away but were there any at the Spa site? I doubt it is Hackenthorpe at all, I would have thought that if there had been an archaeological dig locally there would have been talk of it in the pub or even in the Star. That looks like a high wall through the window so if it was Hackenthorpe it would have to be in the village, I think. I think it might be a case of thinking it is somewhere else, but where?

  21. Looking at the building roof-line just visible over the wall, through the arched window. Could they be the gables of Hackenthorpe Hall on Main Street? But that would mean that this photograph was taken some distance away from the traditional site of Birley Spa.
