January 1837 William Bradley, coach proprietor and John Newton Mappin, peral handle merchant, purchased land and built the brewery. Mappin left for a brewing career in Rotherham. Bradley carried on until joined by his sons Reuben and Frederick. William Bailey’s will published July 1873; Reuben Bradley succeeded him. National distribution plus export trade to Australia. Taken over by Kirby and Ward February/March 1876. William Whitmarsh started as a publican/brewer at at Watsons Walk, moving by 1852 to 3 Earl Street (near South Street, Moor). April 1852 purchased the Free Trade Brewery and the brewery tap the Free Trade Inn (later to become the South Street Hotel) from William Jessop. John Watson Jr. had the brewery until 1882 (the year of his death presumably could have been earlier, his will was published in 1882); Emma Watson took over and added the Portland Arms, Portland Street to the small number of tied houses. April 1892 merger/takeover with Whitmarsh’s South Street Brewery, forming Whitmarsh, Watson and Co. Watson’s input as regards properties : Albio Inn, Lambert Street Albion Inn, Mitchell Street Broomhill Tavern, Glossop Road Crown Inn, Blackburn Road Dog and Gun, Bath Street/Headford Street Portland Arms, Portland Street Princess Royal, Slinn Street Victoria Hotel, Creswick Street, Walkley. Nothing remains of the brewery. William Henry Strouts and Thomas Harryman were co-partners and took over (what year) the Neepsend Brewery of Shepherd, Green and Hatfield (which was there from 1835). Strouts and Hatfield were joined by Charles Waterman in 1867. Harryman of Henley and Waterman of Ealing, London were sleeping partners. The Neepsend Brewery was briefly held by Frederick Wigan (London businessman) it was acquired by Strouts in July 1868 along with a few tied houses. W H Strouts will (Grenoside resident) published 23rd December 1878. His son Edward Strouts took a partner Robert Arnold Osier of Kensington. Strouts Brewery Company Limited were registered as a public company in April 1890. Acquired bt Tennants Brothers of the Exchange Brewery in 1918. The remains of Strouts premises were bought by Turton Brothers and Matthews. This is actually Charles Hitchen or Kitchen Ashley, a bankrupt in 1861 ("The Innkeeper and traveller" have him down as Kitchen). 1861 Census has him at Pack Farm, Osmaston, Derbyshire, visitor, aged 26, born Sheffield.
