Exchange Brewery

Tennant Brothers Exchange Brewery

Bridge Street.

Samuel Cheatle Proctor had the original Exchane Brewery; he had previously owned the Spring Lane Brewery before selling it on to John Watson in the 1840’s.

1841 Census image Clarkson Street, brewer, aged 45.

The first Exchange Brewery was near the Sheffield Corn Exchange (hence the name).

Proctor was joined in the mid-1840’s by Edward and Robert Tennant, the brothers became sole owners.

Quote from Barnard about “the move”.

alley named the Hoyle or the Isle.

Edward Tennant died shortly after the move to Bridge Street (when ?), Robert carried on..

The man who carried out the move, Thomas Moore, became a partner. Thomas Moore was Lord Mayor of Sheffield four years in a row from 1868-71 (Picture ?).

Robert Tennant died on the 24th July 1866, his widow, Mrs Caroline Tennant retained ownership of the business and a son, Robert Tennant took up office.

Thomas Moore moved more into his Civic duties and Robert James Tennant ran the brewery.

Thomas Moore died 1880 (?).

Robert James Tennant of Southbourne Road died 1882 (?).

His widow Mrs Mary Neville Tennant turned the business into a public company in August 1882.

1958 Tennants sold the Don Brewery to Abbott’s Roadside Services Ltd of Sheffield. The brwery tap, the New Inn, was lost to Penistone Road improvements.

Summary :

1916 A H Smith’s Don Brewery, 62 public houses; premises sold to Turton Brothers and Matthews, steel spring manufacturers in 1919.

1918 Strouts’ Burton Road Brewery, 42 pubs; Moorhead brewery sold off piecemeal between 1925 and 1927.
