RichardB
Cannon Brewery William Stones Cannon Brewery Rutland Road. Began learning the trade on Acorn Street, just off Shalesmoor with Joseph Watts at the Cannon Brewery. The name may have come from the nearby foundry that cast gun barrels. Wikipedia claims he was born 1840 at Hartshead, where his mother was a cabinet case maker. Watts and Stones fitrst purchase was a small beerhouse the Kelham Tavern (near the Kelham Island Museum), this was in 1852. In 1854 they took over the White Hart, Worksop Road. In April of 1856 William Stones is recorded as buying property and licensed houses from William Watts of Dewsbury (deceased former partners property being sold by the inheritor). William Stones was on his own. He purchased land at Neepsend, Rutland Road was not yet built. The Crown Inn was purchased months later, the re-built of the Crown went on to become the brewery tap. This was purchased from Francis Henry Chambers, Chambers Brewery (more later). William Stones bought Ash Grove, Clarkehouse Road in 1883 though he was resident there in 1881 (Census). He died in November 1894 – Wikipedia claims 1900). Obituary, Sheffield Inpedendant, page 76. William Stones Ltd was registered as a public company less than a year after his death. Business was extended to Huddersfield in 1896. In February 1912 Stones took over the fourteen tied houses of Chambers’ Brunswick Brewery; the Brunswick premises were considered surplus to requirements. 1954 Stones and Tennants jointly took over the Sheffield Free BreweryCompany. Though in 1955 all the assets went to Tennants – alternatively the tied assets were split evenly, which makes more sense. 1954 acquired Mappins of Rotherham. 1968 Stones amalgamated with Bass Charrington. Census images found for 1851, 61, 71, 81 and 91. Death Oct-Dec 1894, aged 68.
