Birks acquired the Ladysbridge brewery in the mid 19th Century and continued to trade until 1900.

It was taken over by Duncan Gilmour and Company, all of the brewing was transferred to Bridge Street.

Birks has previously (1865) acquired Samuel Berry’s Crown Brewery, Langsett Road and Wilmott’s Wicker Brewery, Saville Street.

Birks had the Sheffield Coat of Arms as its trademark.

Duncan Gilmour & Co.

Founded as a wine and spirit merchants in Queen Street in 1831.

In the 1860’s they moved to Dixon Lane where they remained as wine and spirit merchants until 1959.

William Henry Birks, Brewer, Ladysbridge Brewery, 9 Union Buildings White’s 1871

Brewing began at the Furnival Brewery on Furnival Gate but the Ladybridge Brewery of W H Birks was purchased in 1900.

Windsor Ales and Windsor Castle Trade Mark were related to the 1902-1915 Windsor Brewery in Liverpool with no connection to the town of Windsor itself.

1906 140 Pubs from the Whitmarsh Watson Brewery.

1910 Greaves Norfolk Brewery of Broad Street, Park.

The tied houses of Thomas Rawsons were bought in 1946 (Rawson’s at Pond Street having suffered terribly during the blitz).

1954 Gilmour’s Hallamshire Ale, Golden Ale, Extra Stout.

There was a bid by Tetley’s of Leeds (what year) and an estate of 342 public houses were acquired by Tetley’s.

The old Ladysbridge Brewery was demolished to make way for an extension to the Law Courts.

The brewery tap, the Bridge Inn also went at this time.

Gilbert and Arnold’s Milton Brewery

Button Lane

Established 1839 on Button Lane.

Gilbert and Arnold lasted 1839-49, when Susan Gilbert only was in charge.

Superceded in 1853 by William Gilbert (son ? check Ancestry).

William lasted until 1856.

In 1857 Riley and Dunkerley are shown but kept it for only about two years.

Mr Barton Wells was the former head and his widow was Catherine Wells of Hope, Derbyshire.
