High House Brewery

Dearden’s High House Brewery

Burton Street/547 Penistone Road.

Founded in 1833 by the grandfather of Henry James Dearden.

OR, indeed between 1841 and 1845 !

The brewery exported to the colonies hence the names “Tiger” and “Bushman”.

They were taken over in 1901 by Duncan Gilmours. Bottling continued at High House Brewery under the supervision of Mr Hardness Dearden.

1846

“that ancient messuage or tenement called, or known, by the name of High House in Nether Hallam, formerly the residence of George Bamfort, Esq., with the barns, stables, brewhouse and other erections formerly in the occupation of Christopher Oates, afterwards of John Nicholson and George Greaves but now of H J Dearden and William Doncaster”.

Hope Brewery

Carter, Milner and Bird

Hope Brewery

Mowbray Street.

1892 – Christopher Carter, Eleazar Milner and George Bird.

George Bird was originally associated with a small brewery on Montgomery Terrace Road (when ? what was it called, address detail?).

Christopher Carter, aged 8 working in John Brown’s steel works.

Started in a row of derelict cottages in Mowbray Street, a Public company in 1899.

The outbreak of World War I and Eleazar Milner and George Bird both passing away led to the closure

By 1918 the brewery plant and machinery were unsaleable.

George Bird’s son, William Ernest Bird returned from War, had a nervous breakdown but managed to get brewing back going in 1921. Trade was not brisk, then followed the 1926 General Strike and the conditions following that.Carter, Milner and Bird had been a pioneer of chilling and carbonating ales and stouts in 1904..

1938 saw the closure of the old Hope Brewery and removal to a new site at Claywheels Lane, Wadsley Bridge.

In 1940 the Anchor Breqwery of Henry Tomlinson, Cherry Street (opposite the cricket pavilion at Bramall Lane) was hit during the blitz, the premises were gutted and production ceased.

Thomas Carter of the Hope Brewery and William Parker of the Anchor Brewery amalgamated in 1942 to form the Hope and Anchor Brewery.

In 1946 Wheatley and Bates of Napier Street (Black Beer, Hop Bitters, Ginger beer and beer bottles) was acquired.

Wheatley – 19th century, John Wheatley, Dantzig Brewery, Henry Street, Broomhall.

Non-alcoholic beverages under the “Beacon” brand name.

More details to follow; just wanted to get the bulk of this stuff posted …
