SteveHB
Not an update, just something I came across. William Cockin, late of Gatefield, Infirmary lane, Sheffield, Yorkshire. Beer House keeper and Cow Doctor, and during the months of August and September 1839, a Prisoner for Debt in the Gaol of Sheffield, aforesaid, previously of Lambert Street, Sheffield, aforsaid, Publican and Cow Doctor and formerly of Mulby, near Rotherham, Yorkshire, Farmer. (Published Jan 1840) Could have been.. Gatefield, Infirmary Rd., if so it knocks the 'open date' back five years Here he is at the Union, Lambert Street Cow Doctor ? I do hope he washed his hands before serving the beer ! :)

As you can see the left hand side I wrote over because it wasn't very clear but the Gatefield was two seperate words and es or s on the end eg: Gate Fields. Can you make out what it says for occupation of Mr Whitham and also his first name?

You've made magnificent progress and ShefieldHistory is now the best deposit of information, my work is eclipsed, but that needs to be updated, We could do with Dobberd back, and Jeremy, but we don't know if that will happen. I suggest we start a new thread on Pubs and transfer all and updated facts there - a MASSIVE undertaking, I've been at this longer than it took to get my Degree already. Thoughts, anyone please ? It needs discussing for sure. The Pubs was the first attempt at an A-Z with data, fine for a first attempt, but, much has been found since and many updates. If we decide to do it, it will need help and about a year ... to be continued.
