'In 1904 the landlord was Fred Oakes. Coaches stopped here on the way to Castleton, next to the pub was a smithy that became a garage.. The old inn was pulled down in 1928 to make way for the present hostelry.' from Ecclesall by ELHG.

'The Whirlow Bridge Inn was built around 1846 on the curve of an old turnpike road. Originally a beer house, it had a double frontage, stabling and was a pleasant place for travellers to stop. In the 1920's it became a favourite oasis for walkers from te city as there was little traffic and the area was still very rural. However the landlord lost hislicence and the inn was then converted into use for a tea rooms. It later became a private residence and was demolished in August 1938.' from Ecclesall by Ecclesall Local History Society

from 'Last Orders' by D Lamb

The Unwin family had a unique link with the Parish Church of St Mary and were hereditary sextons. Again this is a replacement building. The earlier pub was housed in a smaller building behind the large sqare pub which dominates the small square in front of it today. The first pub was included on the 1786 map which was suveyed and drawn by Fairbanks.

When the photo below was taken the White Bear had closed January 2009. pw
