This pub was one of those which received a new name in the wave of exultation arising from a stroke of good fortune enjoyed by the landlord indulging in the Sport of Kings. The horse called Why Not won the Grand National steeplechase in 1894 it was ridden by a jockey called Gatland and it was owned by Mr J Widger.'
