Sheffield History Then & Now Calendar 2010

Just noticed on the Wicker pictures.

There's an extra bit of masonry added to the bridge, above the arch.

Not there in the B&W photo, and yet in the modern one it doesn't look like an "add on"

If anything the B&W pic looks wrong without it.

More clear on Stuart's other Then & Now .. here

I think we have discussed this extra bit on top of the Wicker before somewhere vox, probably when we first put this particular then and now together which may have been around this time last when I was pulling a lot of old Sheffield pictures from my archive so that they could be matched up with modern pictures for the then and now topic. The B&W picture is mine from 1974 and the other one is Stuarts from last year.

I can't find our discussion on the bit on top of the Wicker at present but Stuart is the site "link fairy" so when he reads this a link to it will probably appear with a wave of his wand and a following post. lol

I also agree with vox and Mike's suggestions on this one,

vox's sample gives a good idea as to what a finished page would look like.

All we need now are a dozen Then & Now images choosing,

what needs to be taken into consideration is;

Image dimensions (needs to fit nice in the image area)

Image size (small and low resolution photos may look OK on screen,

but when printed out the quality could be poor)

Image quality (the clearer the better)

With regard to this I put something on General Chat. :)

I've had a scan around with the search but can't find it yet. Hopefully --- as you say. :)

I’ve just had a quick look through the then and now topic and without looking at the full size versions have drawn up my quick shortlist. It would be useful to have these in one place so I could ‘vote’ for my best 12, and of course eliminate any that don’t look quite as good in full size.

Anyway I have listed the ones I like by post number on the above thread, and by this I mean the original pictures in that post rather than any included within quotes. So:

Post #s

28,39,55,82,

111,112,143,156,172,188,

217,260,266,270,275,279,

319,337,

338 (indulging myself but one for April as it includes St George's Day Parade),

352,378,380.

Thanks for adding your selections Mike,

do you have the original images of post #338 Trippet Lane please?

I had considered that one myself, but the resolution isn't high enough.

Guest gazndaz

Steve,

Just joined the forum, and amongst other things found this fascinating.

Will calendars go on sale and if so how and when will you announce it?

Cheers,

Garry

Nice idea Steve,

A bit slow to open the new window on my computer but I think this gives YOU the "LINK FAIRY" title that Stuart and Richard were the main contenders for lol

Excellent work Steve, are mine to only suggestions though? can something like this be put to a vote/poll.

Whatever the finished selections add a link www.sheff...../12345/etc to each page as a bonus; the link should be to great posts unrelated to the image whether it be Charlie Peace, Gang Wars, Cabbage Alley, The Fagey Joe Mystery, The Lightie-uppy-pressie-buttonie-pond-street-fella - whatever - just a thought.

As with the transport calendar we have more images here than we need to make a calendar.

24 then & now pictures in the shortlist, - by my reckoning that's 2 years worth of calendar.

Looks like they are all yours Mike lol

A poll is limited to 20 selections and there are 24 images,

that would mean two poll's, each having twelve images,

doing it that way would just complicate matters.

So as you were good enough to email me a high resolution photo of #338 (Trippet Lane)

I have decided that we should use that one,

and also #28 (Wicker Arches).

Can I ask you omit two images from the remaining twenty-two please,

and I will have a go at setting up a poll -

"that should be fun, never having done one before"

OK, then I would remove 82 & 378b

Hope that hasn't upset anyone but there are other then and nows of the same areas left.

Now sorted, did set up a Poll that worked (now removed due to a glitch)

Don't worry about removing those two images Mike,

it had to be done,

and after all you were the only member who made a selection.

Just added my votes. Well I tried. :)

When I clicked a number the previous selection disappeared.

Closed down to try again. When I reopened, it says I've already voted?

Here are my choices.

143, 156, 172, 188, 270, 275, 279, 319, 337, 352, 378, 380.

Have I broken it already. :(

I assumed that like in a General election that I could vote for only 1

Can I vote for 12 then?

After my one vote it told me I had already voted so I thought that it was OK.

Having not used the poll options before perhaps someone needs to explain it to us.

Sorry vox I shold have said,

It's limited to one vote only,

from what I can make out that is the only way it can be set up.

Thanks for the clarification Steve, that's how I thought it would work.

But lets make it clear to the members that if we are choosing 12 pictures (or there abouts) and we only get 1 vote each then it is

very important

that

As many members as possible actually vote

otherwise there could be insufficient choices to complete this democratic group calendar making exercise.

I assume that the closing date for the poll will be December 30th so that Steve can analysis the results, finalise the calendar design and upload it for New Years Eve so that we can all download it and print it off the same day so that it can up on our walls by the start of 2010.

Never set a poll up on here before Dave,

it took me numerous attempts to work out how to.

The interface can be set up with multiple questions, all of which can have one answer,

but from what I have found a poll is restricted to one vote.

I am hoping to have it done and dusted well before then,

a couple of days after Christmas at the latest.

I was in a terrible state last year. I didn't get a new calendar 'till 2nd January. I didn't have a clue what date it was for a whole day. lol

Steve

Sorry, my fault. It does clearly say "limited to just the one vote" but I understood it as vote Once as opposed to vote for One picture.
