Sheffield History Then & Now Calendar 2010

Recommended Posts

Towards the end of last year due to popular demand from our members

I created our first Sheffield History Calendar (2009)

Link to Topic .. here

It's now the time of year to start a discussion and make suggestions about

what you would like to see on the Sheffield History 2010 calendar?

As the A4 size limits this down to twelve images,

I have no objection to making more than one; perhaps a transport theme also ?

Or maybe one of our members would like to have a crack at knocking one up.

New members: please feel free to make comment & participate in the discussion.

Steve :)

One request,

Not to do with which pictures are chosen as we have so many excellent ones on the site that we really are spoilt for choice.

But to do with the calendar part of the calendar itself

Can we have it so that it starts every month with the same day of the week, preferably either Sunday or Monday in the left hand column like a conventional calendar does

Last years calendar started every month off with the first of the month in the left hand column which meant that the days of the week were in different places on each months calendar, - very confusing

Good suggestion Dave and I do see your point,

I did try to change the order of day on our last calendar but the calendar creation software I used did

not have that facility,

but thanks,

will take note and see what can be done

Thanks Steve,

The choice of pictures makes the calendar more attractive and interesting as a wall display but the actual layout of the calendar part itself would certainly make it more usable for what is after all a calendars main purpose.

I can remeber back in my school days once making a calendar,

just a single picture on card and at the bottom of it I attached a tiny book like calendar.

Wonder if you can still buy them little calendar hangy/sticky on book things?

You can Steve my boys bring one home every year from school!

As for the calendar - what about volunteers at famous Sheffield sites in staes of undress like that Women's Institute 'naked' calendar. I'd decline myself but that RichardB is a fine figure of a man I hear lol

How would they work for a Sheffield History calendar, we just publish the photo's and members buy their own little "hangy/sticky book thingy" lol

Not to keen on Dunsby's idea unless we have more suitable models :)

We could use images from 1 of Admins other sites and photoshop them onto photos of Sheffield locations lol

Only ONCE Steve :o

At Norfolk Juniors we had to make one every year just before Christmas, - so 4 years worth.

Now if as well as your parents half your family, - aunties, uncles etc all wanted one you ended up making loads of them.

I got really fed up of making calendars with hangy sticky on book things

What, -

A sort of "Sheffield Wednesday go on a tour of Sheffield" calendar?

I thought the other site was OwlsTalk

Or is there another site that we don't know about ;-)

There is another Sheffield Wednesday related site <_<

Don't know about that one.

Anyway, we want a Sheffield History calendar not a Sheffield Wednesday calendar as I am sure there will be loads of Owls calendars anyway to satisfy the demands of the teams supporters.

My vote would be for a calendar full of Then & Now pictures as they fascinate me.

We certainly have enough then and now pictures from all over the Sheffield area to be able to do that.

I remember Mike mentioning a Then & Now calendar last year,

problem is with the dimensions of the then and now images,

they would have to be reduced to fit the image area.

What do you think, would it come out right in A4 size?

:(

Another way of doing it in landscape is with two A4 images,

one for the picture and other for the months.

Would work better in portrait.

Perhaps if you justify the picture to left or right you could use the space at the side to put a couple more relevant pictures or some history. Or both.

Just a thought. :)

That looks excellent with the information added - could make ref: to the forum member/s who took each pic as well if known.

Phew. Glad you "Got it"

I was about to make an edit to point out that I wasn't suggesting doing a Joke calendar. :o I merely stuck something in there to illustrate where and how it could be set out.

I had nightmares last night about it being misinterpreted. :)

Well done vox, - I like the text and additional picture you have put in better than the rest of the calendar now lol

I also agree with vox and Mike's suggestions on this one,

vox's sample gives a good idea as to what a finished page would look like.

All we need now are a dozen Then & Now images choosing,

what needs to be taken into consideration is;

Image dimensions (needs to fit nice in the image area)

Image size (small and low resolution photos may look OK on screen,

but when printed out the quality could be poor)

Image quality (the clearer the better)

Just noticed on the Wicker pictures.

There's an extra bit of masonry added to the bridge, above the arch.

Not there in the B&W photo, and yet in the modern one it doesn't look like an "add on"

If anything the B&W pic looks wrong without it.
