RichardB
Just coz ... George Cartwright, 24 Florence Street, 1891, Collier New Inn, 24/26 Vine Road. Is also in Kelly's 1965, seems strange that this pub is not in the A-Z.
RichardB
He's on a list of mine "Beer retailers", posted 12 June 2008 George Cartwright Beer Retailer 26 Florence Street, Darnall Kelly's 1893 that's all it says; nothing to suggest he was a Publican (see Census image); or that the place lasted any length of time - which, it appears we now know it did. RichardB
Here are some possible's on Hollis Croft : Black Bull (number 40 or 74) Cock (59) Gate/Old Gate (10, 62 or 63 whichever you prefer) King's Arms (51) Orange Branch (28, 57 or 58) Royal Oak (2, 3 or 11) another Royal Oak - Broad Lane or 9 Hollis Croft) - unsure whether you have already combined them. Sportsmans (beerhouse) number 23 it'll keep you out of mischief checking them out Nottingham Arms 36 Hollis Croft ??? 1937, 38, Arthur Brookfield. RichardB
and my, carefully considered answer is ........................ wait for it ............ a renamed Royal Oak. I have Michael Fagan, Beer retailer, 36 Hollis Croft from Kelly's 1893 which ties in nicely with Royal Oak, 11 Hollis Croft where I have Michael Fagan listed from 1925-1931 - he might have continued a little before Arthur Brookfield took over whilst Michael was away bombing damns (or was it Michael Fagan Senior in 1893 ? - Lord only knows, it's a tangled web all right !). I also have Arthur Brookfield listed in my comments against Royal Oak for 1936, which is nice ... probably. Let me know what you think. RichardB
and to wrap this one up nicely, 1901 Census Michael Fagan, 36 Hollis Croft, Nottingham Arms Tavern, 36 Hollis Croft, he's 52, with wife Margaret and sons Joseph, Edward and, er, Michael. and my, carefully considered answer is ........................ wait for it ............ a renamed Royal Oak. Sportsmans (beerhouse) number 23 Yes it sounds a possibility with the addresses and keepers that the Nottingham arms and the Royal Oak could be one of the same. I will combine the Royal Oak 11 Hollis Croft and the Royal Oak Broad Lane as we have the same keeper William Slack at both houses. There's many more unanswered ones.

RichardB
As and when you are able, bring 'em on. Isolated pubs with a question or two I find much easier to work with than trying to "stand far enough back" to take in the whole picture. Each one of these we collectively unravel improves the listings greatly, giving a more accurate picture of the finished article plus removing duplicates along the way. There's many more unanswered ones.

We also have the Upperthorpe Hotel and the Norfolk Arms both of the same address. Was the Upperthorpe once called the Norfolk Arms? I can't seem to find any keepers for it yet.
