I love the Ghost Tavern, especially since its so central. Eckington and Mosborough, I couldn't find without a map, but Campo Lane ...

are these boozers or beerhouses ?

They're all down under public houses.

Home or premises of a sausage maker, James Dowson in 1852 ...

I wonder who was in those sausages coming back to haunt them.

Lot 4 Beerhouse Ghost Tavern.

The Sheffield & Rotherham Independent (Sheffield, England), Thursday, April 30, 1864;

Thank you syrup, so it did exist then.

I found it under public houses as this sometimes happens, which then throws

a spanner in the works.

A most excellent find and it seems to extend the date, UKL has 1859 and now 1864.

Downes - Bowns - close enogh to be "typed in as heard" ...

and it was going for around ten years by 1864.

I can find no link to beerhouse or public house connected to no. 35 Campo Lane, almost every other trade imaginable but no drinks.

Number 25, however, that's a different story

John Hagger & Son, distillers and spirit merchants, 25 Campo Lane, home Western Bank (White's 1837)

John Marples, beer retailer, 25 Campo Lane (Kelly's 1893)

William Jackson (!), beerhouse, 25 Campo Lane (White's 1911)

Mrs Susannah Mary Hormell, beerhouse, 25 Campo Lane (White's 1919)

and prior to this lot :

Mark Arons, painter (House, sign &c.), 25 Campo Lane (Slaters 1846)

and Mark Arons, plumbers and glaziers, 24 Campo Lane (Slaters 1846)

now, even I wouldn't drink paint, but, a White Spirit and Tonic Water, well, who could resist ... ?

I've just had a re-check and it definately says 35. I've looked on the 1854 and the

number 25 is a boot & shoe maker by the name of William Singleton and of course

there's the sausage maker at number 35. :)

Very possibly the least legible line from any Census I have ever seen - but, it's a Publican and the details match with those from 1851 (when he's become a brewer), so here goes

Thomas Bodger, aged 35, Publican, Heeley, born Norfolk if that helps.

wife Elizabeth 28, born Sheffield

Sproglettes :

Mary, 3, who makes it to 1851 Census

and Rebecca, 1, who doesn't.

Name the Pub !

Is also in Kelly's 1965, seems strange that this pub is not in the A-Z.
