UKL is it Wigtwizzle or could it be Wightwizzle ? this map pre-dates the construction of Broomhead Reservoir in 1929 shows a PH, the name is not very clear but I think it could be the 'Sportsmans Arms'

I guess that's the one on the map. :)

Nice one UKL, on a follow up to your info I came up with .. Mrs Marther Hollins, spotsman & farmer (sportsman !) Kelly's 1881 And .. 'In the 17th century Wigtwizzle Hall (not named on the above map) was the house of Mary Ibbotson, daughter of the Rev. John Ibbotson, she married Christopher Willson of Broomhead Hall (see on map, top L/H) Wigtwizzle Hall became a famhouse and at one time a public house Wigtwizzle Hall was demolished in 1935' I wonder if the old hall was renamed and became the Sportsman's PH ? photo not dated

Eastwood has three spellings—Wightwizle, Wigtwizle and Wigtwisle, Hunter has Wightwistle and Harrison has several references to Wigtwisell. 1850s OS has Wightwistle. 1894 and 1903 OS has Wightwizzle, current OS has Wigtwizzle. It's just over the hill from us and all the modern signposts have Wigtwizzle which is how the locals pronounce it, and probably did in Harrison's time from his spelling of the name. It sounds Cornish to my ears rather than Yorkshire. The antiquary, John Wilson of Broomhead, would be the ultimate authority; where would we find a copy of his Hallamshire ? The pub we mentioned , Sportsman's Arms was ran by a man called Hollins, well not far from there my late in-laws used to live in a cottage called the Hollins. Just a thought. Did you know the Broomhead Hall was taken down piece by piece and shipped to America to be rebuilt?

Last Easter Sunday with Bat - stiok and trip, To Pitsmoor Firs I did eagerly skip, But soon got fast in a quickset hedge ; A Methodist Preacher, good-natured and stout, Took hold of my shoulders and lifted me out; And said, " Young man, take advice from a stranger.. Permit me with freedom to tell thee thy danger, Thou art in the roed to Loxley Edge!' There was indeed a cricket ground at Firs Hill, - on the edge of Great Roe wood. Approached via Roe lane and the track through the allotments behind Firs Hill house. Some distance from Loxley Edge though, so the anonymous poet was well lost and probably looking for a game of Nipsy rather than cricket. BTW - what happened to the date in the 'last post info' column ? I see just a number as you might in an incorrectly formatted spreadsheet.
