Red Lion Hotel in Unidentifed Area

s06958.jpg.64e57413d13860a1b74d68f0b24ece26.jpgs06958

Photographer: Photofinishers

Copyright: WM. Stones Ltd.

This photograph has been unidentified for nearly 20 years.

I think most of the "Red Lions" have been discounted in Sheffield. Every possibility it has been demolished.

Is it Sheffield?

Thanks Antony for your suggestion, below is the nearest view I could find to your suggestion.

Brincliffe Oaks Hotel, No. 9 Oak Hill Road, Nether Edge. 20/05/1963

https://www.picturesheffield.com/frontend.php?keywords=Ref_No_increment;EQUALS;s22219&pos=3&action=zoom&id=24819

James Leslie Frederick Kellie took many Photographs of children playing in Park Hill Flats area; Attercliffe; Pye Bank Flats; Neepsend; Outside Library, Blackstock Road & Gleadless Valley.

There are a few unidentified, possibly will never be identified as there isn't enough of the building, I thought this one was a possible to be pinpointed.

There could be a chance to identify the children, majority of which are taken in the 1960's.

Just typing   Kellie   into the Picture Sheffield website search should bring all his Photographs up; including the buildings he photographed.

Red Lion…….were there many, or indeed any, Bass houses in Sheffield? The, what appears to be artificial stonework, also looks “foreign”.

Unidentified Pub/Beerhouse, George Lowe, Licensee.

This is the best I can do with the Pub sign.

I nominate the Bulls Head Inn, Monsal Dale.  The modern building is very different.  But the 1897 map has similarities.  George Lowe was the landlord until his death after a long illness on Saturday afternoon, 1st August 1896 (maybe his wake was the reason for the photograph?)  The sign does look like a bull's head to me.

BullsHeadMonsalDale.png.1b1a268585df9c0f080dd1adcd42a1aa.png

The inn was more popularly known as the Edgestone Head, and was a noted destination for trippers from Sheffield. Mr Lowe was good company and had a good many anecdotes and witty repartee.  He was 52 and left a widow and six children, mostly grown up. He was buried at the family plot in Holmesfield.  The licence was transferred to his widow, Mrs Alice Lowe - but in granting it, the Chairman of Bakewell Petty Sessions asked her to stop Sunday afternoon visitors from sitting under the veranda and jeering local church goers. (Note the veranda on the photograph).  Alice died on Sunday afternoon 12th February 1899.

Brilliant, Edmund.

This one has been unidentified for too long, glad to see it solved. Thank you.

I've emailed Mark at Picture Sheffield.

Thanks again Edmund. Again, not in Sheffield! no wonder the hours of glaring through directories & old pics never found it.

There is a most interesting read all about this site at Monsal Head ( previously Edgestone Head ) which includes the said

Bulls Head Inn ( Monsal Head Hotel )

Can't see any match of this shot around the pub!

Most of the building was stone. Just the extension at the end and a bit at the front seemed to be brick.

Absolutely brilliant Tozzin and for your next trick can you name the children. 😂 Only joking.

Thanks SteveHB for providing the update.

We're certainly keeping Mark at Picture Sheffield busy with the Unidentified solving.

Child playing outside unidentified licensed premises in the 1960's

Photographer, James Leslie Frederick Kellie.

This is a personal favourite of mine.

Enlarging this portion, I have my own thoughts what it says but welcome yours. Perhaps someone could do a better job than me to make it clearer?

Unidentified Licensed Premises, possibly Crofts area.

Date period 1900-1919.

Suggestions include Button Lane. Street name appears to end in T L possibly something Lane.

A search of the Picture Sheffield website will be needed for this one. I don't think we'll have anyone old enough to remember this one.

Unidentified Cottages and Public House.

Enlarging the sign doesn't make it much clearer unless someone can use some trickery beyond me. Of course  may not be Public House sign.

Yard at rear of Unidentified Beer House.

There must have been some indication on the back of the photograph that it was a beerhouse.

Photographs similar to this one were taken by City Engineer and Surveyor so the property was more than likely due for demolition.
