Spear & Jackson, Aetna Works.

IMG_20230104_140035.thumb.jpg.b2c9371fc1e0842515ecbe62d3dfb387.jpg

At the Aetna Works of Messrs. Spear and Jackson the process of saw-making in all its branches may be seen carried out upon a very large scale. These extensive premises are situated in Savile Street East adjoining the Midland Railway. Besides their other branches of industry, Messrs. Spear and Jackson are large manufacturers of steel.

In the new saw department the most interesting process is that of making the large circular saws. It is curious to see the ease and accuracy with which the immense pieces of steel (some of them weighing nearly 8 cwt. and being three-eighths of an inch thick) are passed through the various processes of manufacture; machinery being used to facilitate much of the work.

Files and edge tools of all kinds are also made here. Some new branches of manufacture have been during the last few years introduced by this firm - namely, spades and shovels for agricultural and horticultural purposes and also hay, manure and digging forks. These are superior from being made of the best hand-hammered cast steel and tempered by a peculiar process. Each of the tools is forged out of a solid piece of steel, so that there is no chance of any flaw from welding. The consequences of their being made by improved processes, entirely of the best qualities of steel instead of partly iron, is that they are lighter, more elastic, will stand a considerable strain without fear of breaking and are much more durable so that, while the persons using them can get through a considerably increased amount of labour, they wear about four times as long as the old fashioned spades and forks. Their superiority is so manifest that they bid fair in a short time entirely to supersede the former kind of forks. The firm has obtained a great reputation for these goods of which a vast number are used not only in this country, but also on the Continent in Australia & etc.

Messrs. Spear and Jackson have received first class distinctions at the Exhibitions of 1851 and 1855, at the former taking the only Council Medal and at the latter the only Gold Medal and decoration for their class of goods. As one of the members has been selected as juror for the  present Exhibition of 1862, they have altogether refrained from sending anything to it, leaving the field open for other manufacturers.

Mr. Samuel Jackson received from the Emperor of the French at the Exhibition of 1855 the cross of the Legion of Honour.
