In the Sheffield district the usual holidays are a half holiday on Shrove-Tuesday, two whole holidays at Easter and Whitsuntide; two half-holidays at the Summer and November fairs; from four to eight days at Christmas.

Every Monday also is a sort of holiday, but not always so to the hafters' boys.

The only time the Children have for play is at dinner-time, and in the evenings, in summer, if their work is over soon enough, and if they are not too tired to play.
