Descendants of those who are now deceased can do work for their ancestors by standing in for them. Billions of people have lived on this earth who did not have the opportunity to hear the gospel while they lived. Specific ordinances must be done on this earth, however. So, doing work by proxy for people gives them the opportunity in the next life to choose if they wish to accept that ordinance or not. In this way no one is punished for not having heard the gospel. No one is forced to accept these ordinances either, but by doing them here for those who have gone before us, they are given the opportunity to choose for themselves. Baptisms for the dead are only done in the temple. The fonts all rest on the backs of twelve oxen, which represent the twelve tribes of Israel.
