Etcher/engraver Social Status

Hi

My great x 2 grandfather was an etcher and engraver in Sheffield from about 1820 until mid 1860s. I would like to know the social standing on an etcher and engraver. eg was it middle class?

During this time the family lived in a number of streets- initially at 56 Ward Street, then to the Croft's district at 26 Pea Croft in mid 1840's, Arundel Lane in June 1849 and finally, in March 1856 to 43 Pond Street.

I would appreciate any thoughts.
