The Two Great (Outstanding) Pub Mysteries

Two Pubs have eluded me, I'm appealing (Yes and the peasants are revolting) for any evidence on the following two places :

Leg of Mutton and Trimmings - kept (possibly) by Mr Waterfall - none found in any directory (thus far) 1810's-1820's

Spinks Nest, West Bar area - kept by Thomas Youdan - not found thus far - late 1850's/early 1860's.

I've searched for these but not found a sausage or a leg of mutton. :(

Well, that's one much respected, knowledgeable researcher into the historical Pubs of Sheffield has drawn a blank and me also

Mr Waterfall who is known as Longfoot who kept the Public House in Smithfield called the LEG OF MUTTON AND TRIMMINGS.

Been missing from this site for far too long, but had a problematic year or so....sad to hear of the passing of Tsavo too :(

..anyhow..

Whites 1849 under beer houses is listed:

Youdan T. (casino) 66 Westbar

Not sure what the 'casino' is meant to denote, whether its a name or an actual casion (did the word exist in 1849?).

I've seen reference to the leg of mutton in passing somewhere, i'm trawling my books now to find it.

BTW any mention of a 'Maltsters arms' at Intake anywhere? somewhere in the region of 120+years ago. Its been said to me a property owned by family was once a pub called this, indeed the cellers have signs of ancient racking on the walls, the person who passed this info to me has died, but I do recall reading something from Eric Youle in years gone by mentioning it.

There is a connection here somewhere...from reminices of old Sheffield:

JOHNSON: There are many other names well known in Sheffield that might

be mentioned in connection with West bar, though this would bring us' to

times more recent than we profess to take cognizance of. There was Mr.

John Turton, the surgeon (see p. 42.); John Spink, the pawnbroker, who,

marrying the niece of the owner of the property, turned Benjamin Fox out

of the shop where the ruined Casino now stands ; Benjamin Smilter,

father of the present High Bailiff; Francis Cluley, the earliest

surgical instrument maker, who was next door to the " Old Tankard,"

removing thence to Surrey street.

What is lacking (to my mind) is any entry linking Waterfall and any Public house, just one little directory mentioning Public house, victualler, beerhouse, spirits - anything really.

Right, I'd found this over a year ago, told Dunsbyowl via PM then forgot it altogether ...

We need a persons name, an idea of an address, a known year and a name for the Pub - all preferably from a printed resource e.g. census; directory ...

so

John Whitehead, victualler (Leg of Mutton), Smithfield, 1821 Trade Directory of Sheffield.

If the snippets are available online, I'd appreciate a link please.

Sometimes different people, in different countries, can access different texts - Jeremy was very useful at getting inti "stuff" from the USA - whilst TonyR is probably one of our least active members - he is a USA resident and I have his home number and would be more than willing to help.

I'd love to find Waterfall as a publican - I'm beginning to suspect he was an owner rather than a publican ... in which case we're looking for a transfer document or suchlike ...
