Black-A-Moor: Relic From Crusader Times?

I always wondered about this intriguing yet un-PC sounding name.

Without knowing the exact history, I'm guessing that it literally means that the heathland countrside there was as black as a Moor, as the title possibly derived from Crusader times (the third being c.1187-92)?

If this is so, who named it so? If not, what is it's origins?

Blackamoors Head, 25 High Street (aka Grey Horse) - implies a human, maybe ? Trophy of Battle ...

Girdler family, 1675, Aldine Court + only two other known keepers, very poor.
