RichardB
Aug 26 1771 Cricket match eleven of Nottingham v eleven of Sheffield. The Nottingham players were Huthwayte Loughman Collishaw Turner Roe Spurr Stocks Troop Rawson Coleman and Mew. The contest took place in a field on the north side of the Race course and was won by our townsmen (Nottingham). In this match the stumps were two canes about twenty two inches in height and the bats were about as broad at the bottom as those now played with but tapered upwards till as narrow as an ordinary bat handle. The return match was played at Sheffield in the following year with a different result - Sheffield scoring 70 and Nottingham only
