I have just come back from holiday in Devon & while in Exeter went on one of the many excellent free historical walking tours organised by the council. Ours was churches, cemetaries & Catacombs. The catacombs are closed to the public these days but we were taken inside. Apparently they were built about 1837 because upper class people became concerned that when buried, their body would be snatched by grave robbers. The cost of being buried in the catacombs was 21 guineas which was quite expensive. In both Exeter & Sheffield the cost meant that they were little used & eventually shut when graverobbing stopped.

There's a rumour going round that someone unknown has applied for listed status for the Castle Market building

"Read all about it" as the Star/Green'un sellers used to cry :)

It sounds to me like the work of a mischief maker - is Sheffield to be crippled by heritage blight ? In any case a full excavation of the Castle site is surely more heritage-worthy than preserving the markets.

Given the fierce competition between cities these days, perhaps it's someone from a competitor city who's applied? How's that for a conspiracy theory! <_<
