After the disappointing circumstances of Paddy Kenny's transfer to QPR, I think the following telephone conversation from the memoirs of a Blackburn scout is quite profound.

Thanks for calling Mr Shaw, how are yer?

Who am I talking to?

This is Roland D'Arcy

Who's he when he's at 'ome?

I'm with Blackburn Rovers

Gerraway! I play for Sheffield United.

Yes, I know. I don't play for Blackburn but I wondered how you would feel about playing for them.

Who?

Blackburn Rovers

Didn't you hear me, I play for Sheffield United.

Yes, I know that but how would you like to play for Blackburn Rovers?

Blackburn? It's too far.

It's only a 2½ hour drive from Sheffield.

I don't drive

Well, we could easily find you accommodation here in Blackburn.

Hang on. Play for Blackburn against Sheffield United! Me dad would kill me.

Mr Shaw, do you have an agent?

Only the Prudential, he calls every Tuesday.

Look, take some time to think about it. Can I give you a call in a week?

We haven't got a telephone.

Well, where are you ringing from?

The off-licence
