KENNETH LEONARD COLE.

2nd Lieut, 3rd (reserve) attd. 1st ( 65th Foot ), Battn. The York & Lancaster Regt, only son of Thomas Cole, of Hill Crest, Ranmoor, Sheffield; born Sheffield 19th Oct. 1893, educ. Eastbourne and Leys School, Cambridge; joined the Sheffield Battn. York & Lancs early in Sept. 1914; was promoted L/Cpl on 29 Sept. and Gazetted 2nd Lieut. York & Lancs the same day; joined the 3rd Battn at South Shields on 6th Oct; served with the Expeditionary Force in France and Flanders 21 April 1915, being for some time attached to the 1st East Surrey Regt. In the Ypres Salient; went back to the 1st Battn. of his own Regt. in Aug, and was killed in action near Loos 30 Sept. following, while in command of No 1 platoon, A Coy. His Colonel wrote: ''He was killed in a charge. He was most plucky in leading his men to the attack when he fell, and there is no doubt that he and some of his brother officers showed the up-most courage, and by example spurred their men on to re take a lost trench. Their objective was acheived, and the regt. was specially picked out for praise by the Divisional Commander for their splendid work. Yoru son had not been long with this Battn., but quite long enough for me to appreciate what a hard working, promising officer he was ''.

He is commemorated in Sheffield on the Ranmoor War Memorial, and also inside St. Johns at Ranmoor, and also the Leys School War Memorial at Cambridge.

Dean.
