Welcome to Sheffield History. I tried to follow the Google links to see where you're asking about (Were they Streetviews?) but the links both take me to somewhere on High Street, rather than Carver Street? I don't know if this is caused by our recent problems arising from the up-grade. Or maybe we could advise you on the best way to post google links. If it is caused by the upgrade, bear with us, it's getting sorted. Alternatively, you could try re-posting. I think you're right. There should be more attempts to save, at least, the frontage of some of the buildings which just seem to disappear in a cloud of dust.

SteveHB
Are these the places? Link 1 Link 2 Don't know what went wrong with the original links. If these are the correct buildings that mr_arc refers to.. ? Harrison Brothers and Howson, Cutlery Manufacturers. Link to picturesheffield Originally known as Harrison Brothers (from 1849) this Sheffield manufacturer took on Howson as a partner in 1862. The majority of flatware produced by them was EPNS, however some silver items can be found. They also produced good quality cased sets of carvers, fruit eaters and fish eater/server sets. madannie77
I think that was The Coal Board Health & Safety place in the early 1980's, happy to be proven wrong though ... I think the Safety in Mines Research Centre (as it was) or one of the laboratories of the Health & Safety Executive (as it became later) was further up Broad Lane, at the junction with Wheldon Street, in the building(s) now known as the Kroto Innovation Centre. It is not many years since the Health & safety Lab was relocated to Buxton. Google Map link I could be wrong, though.

Mine was an uneducated quess from someone that left Sheffield in 1981; just a "punt", no reason to add any credence to my post.
madannie77
Mine was an uneducated quess from someone that left Sheffield in 1981; just a "punt", no reason to add any credence to my post. Mine was a guess from someone who left Sheffield in 1987, so I've had six years less to forget I am basing my guess on passing it many times over the years on the 51 bus, and on going there for a job interview in 1986. I seem to recall my travelling expenses (remember when travelling expenses were paid for attending interviews?) being of the order of 20p, because I was living in Sheffield at the time. I also note from Google Streetview that the location posted by mr-arc appears to be turning into student flats. Don't know what it was before, though
jiginc
Mount Zion Congregational Chapel Link to picturesheffield Images from Google streetview The Mount Zion Chapel was, after the Chapel closed, part of the Royal Hospital The building was used as out patients and casualty. It was also a way through to the main building. Also at the back of the old chapel was the entrance to the Mass Radiographic department. I think this is a picture of the inside (Note the windows very Chapel like) Picture Sheffield jiginc
