Good question. I don't know the answer, but here's one to start the ball rolling:

New Inn/New Bridge Inn. 4 Penistone Road North, Wadsley Bridge

George Turner, known to be keeper from at least 1849 to 1871 = at least 22 years

Beats my initial guess, George Fearn, Brown Cow, Radford Street

I'd better try to find the answer, huh ? (May be beyond my skills !)

Wonder what is the longest someone has stayed as keeper of one Pub ? Any bright ideas ?

1852 (White's) Samuel Howson, vict. Sportsman's Inn (Walkley) *

1854 Samuel Howson

1856 (White's) Samuel Howson, vict. Sportsman Inn (Walkley bank)

1861 Samuel Howson

1862 Samuel Hawson

1871 (Census) Samuel Howson, Publican (Walkley Bank Road)

1881 (Census) Samuel Hawson, Licensed Victualler, Sportsman's Inn (100 Walkley Bank Road)

1891 (Census) Samuel Hawson, Licensed Victualler, Sportsmans Inn (100 Walkley Bank Road)

1893 (Kelly's) Samuel Hawson, vict. Sportsman PH (100 Walkley Bank Road)

Now believed to be Hawson throughout, therefore 41 years, maybe longer - 1849, 1846 ?? beyond 1893 ?? Do we know when Samuel passed away ?

I've added these new dates to the A to Z and merged the Barrels

Pye Banks and Bridge houses into one as they were all the same

names and dates,

Only one thing, I can't get the picture link to work, I must have

done something wrong. :(

Just deleting today would be good enough for me.

Not one of my most successful. :(

Computers are brilliant - until they're not. :)

40+ years is a great run; also shows how much work there is left to do.

Out initial (interim) update will be at Christmas covering 1821-1925 (there is still months of work to do on this list); then we hit 1926 - whatever Ukelele Lady decides - possibly beyond 1951. The Shakespeare was kept by one Joseph Fox in 1951, a relative maybe ? David's Father.

Thanks to Norma and Steve for the information, it will make a good start to the 1960's and onwards work which is yet to come; I would think it would take a lot of beting.

Yes Jo was David's dad,

I remember Joseph Fox when he was running the bottom pub on Park Hill flats, the Earl George?

that would be sometime in the early 70's, and shortly after that he was at a pub on Duke Street, the Red Lion I think.

On his retirement from the Licensing trade Joseph moved back to live in Heeley,

and the Shakespeare (owned by his son David) became Joe's local pub.
