29 January 1663

Sheffield born Theologian Robert Sanderson died 1663. Oxford Regius Professor of Divinity 1642-8 & 1660-61. Bishop of Lincoln 1660-63.

29 January 1869

Fatal fight between two boys at the Atlas Works. Verdict on the dead boy: death from natural causes, accelerated by excitement.

29 January 1874

George Hadfield ceased to be MP for Sheffield after representing the town since 1852.

29 January 1885

Thomas Burden born. MP for Sheffield Park 1942-1950.

Arthur Neal died. Born Sheffield, solicitor, Liberal Cllr (1903-21) & at MP for Hillsborough (1918-22).

Ambrose Langley , Sheffield Wednesday footballer and later manager of Hull City, died Sheffield.

Former Vice Chancellor of Sheffield University (1953-1965) John Macnaughton Whittaker, died.
