Sheffield Cutlery Factories raised in Parliament by Cecil Wilson

Mr. CECIL WILSON asked the Home Secretary whether his attention has been 484W called to the statement, upon page 32 of the Annual Report of the Chief Inspector of Factories, as to the work of Sheffield cutlers being carried on in tenement factories which were originally dwelling-houses, and in which there may be 30 or 40 wooden-partitioned small rooms crowded together and leading to narrow and ill-lit passages; and how many Sheffield factories are of fairly modern construction, how many are tenement factories, and how many workpeople are accommodated in each of the two kinds?

9 December 1966 Leeds - Sheffield section of M1 Motorway discussed in Parliament. Sir D. Kaberry asked the Minister of Transport when the decision to build the Leeds-Sheffield motorway was made; when work was started on it; what is the total price of the contract; and when it is expected the new road will be completed and available for use by the public. Mr. John Morris The decision to survey the route was taken in 1959; work started in April, 1965; the total price of the eight contracts is £40 million; it is expected that the road will be completed and opened by the autumn of 1968.

Future of Johnson Firth Brown discussed in Parliamen Mr. Hooley asked the Secretary of State for Industry if he will take steps to acquire for the public the 35 per cent. share in the Sheffield engineering steel and wire groups of Johnson Firth Brown which has been put on the market by Mr. Oliver Jessel.

Mr. Benn This is one of the possibilities which I am considering with the British Steel Corporation, Johnson Firth Brown and the work forces concerned.

Government inspectors awarded Sheffield Homes the maximum three stars, releaseing an additional £285 million to spend on bringing council homes across the city up to the Decent Homes Standard. Sheffield Homes were nowable to improve 29,000 homes, installing thousands of new kitchens, bathrooms, central heating systems and windows for tenants.
