Owlerton Stadium

This famous stadium celebrates it's 80th anniversary this week.

Originally opened as a speedway track in 1929, with Greyhounds starting in 1932 ( I think), since then nearly every sport must have been played at the stadium.

There must be loads of memories and history to be told.

What sports have been there?

Who has appeared there?

Any tales to tell? Any photos?

Only ever went there once; climbed the wall to see some speedway, got bored and climbed back out again lol

Likewise only ever been once, but in my case it was for a Sheffield FC game, 24th August 1996 - search party is currently out looking for the programme!

I went with the rest of the family to some kind of military show. It must have been just after the war. All I can remember is that they fired off an anti aircraft gun which was set up in the stadium. Scared the heck out of me.

In the 60's there was a show, I think it was called Canadian Hell Drivers or something similar. All kinds of crazy stunts being performed in big American cars.

Some history here from The Star.

Sheffield Eagles played their first game here on 2nd September 1984, and played most of their home games at Owlerton until 23rd April 1989, after which time they spent a year playing on seven different grounds before moving to the Don Valley Stadium. According to Trevor Delaney in his book THe Grounds of Rugby League, Owlerton Stadium was closed in September 1989 on safety grounds, but no re-opening date is given.

Experience of the place over an extended period, a full historic perspective, recollections of changes in the paintwork and advertising and shows and promotions and ... and ... impressive, we expect an impressive piece of research work real soon then ?

Ahh.. unfortunately I live about 5,000 miles away in Canada. Although I will drive by on my next visit over, may take some time though!

A mere Ocean cannot dim your genius when it comes to the place everyone else has only been to once (until someone closer comes to mind)

Used to go every week to see the stock car racing with my brother "stu smith" was our hero, then many of the meetings were moved to Bradford and Cleethorpes, they still hold meetings but maybe only twice a year now.

In my late teens a night "at the dogs" was an integral part of the Hillsborough experience, but being older and supposedly wiser, the evenings were spent in the upstairs bar watching the racing on the monitors. lol

Darn it. I did go to the fairgrounds that used to set up in the car park area though. Does this count?
