Lockwood Bros FC

Looking for something else I came across reference to the heroic efforts of this Sheffield football team (with a little hellp ;-) ) in the FA Cup in 1896/7 - anyone add any further information?

Lockwood Brothers

Lockwood Brothers were a works team.

Their ground from the mid 80's on was in Ecclesall Road (and later became the Sheffield F.C. ground).

They first appeared in press reports in 1874 in minor matches and after a couple of years they disappeared from the papers. They reappeared with 1879/80 and a year later they entered the Sheffield Challenge Cup, reaching the semi-finals. They then were the finalists in 1882/3 (losing 2-1 to Wednesday) and winners in 1883/4 and 1884/5 (beating Heeley 2-0 and then Park Grange 2-0 after a 1-1 draw).

Lockwoods greatest achievement occurred in 1886/7 when they reached the fourth round of the F.A. Cup - losing to West Brom in a replay after a disputed game. The most obvious reason for this particular success was the Wednesday Club's failure to send their application for the F.A. Cup in on time. Thus Lockwood Brothers acquired the services of some of Wednesday's best players.

Messrs Lockwood Brothers, Sterling Works, 74-76 Arundel Street,

manufacture cutlery of all kinds.

Table, butchers, and other such knives, they use shear steel,

but make their spring cutlery of refined crucible steel.
