Iron abounded there and from a very early period the rude whittles fabricated there had been sold all over the kingdom. “A Sheffield thwitel bare in his hose.†The Sheffield whittle was a very rude knife, consisting of a rough blade fastened to a wooden handle, and for a long time there was little improvement upon it. The “jack knife†followed the whittle, and this was supported by a tang when open, and had a groove in the handle for the blade to shut into.
