Guest Jeremy
Hopefully the following is of use to some: A Directory of Sheffield including the manufacturers of the adjacent villages: with the several marks of the cutlers, scissor & file-smiths, edgetool, & sickle makers. To which are added, the regular setting out and return of the posts; and a correct list of the coaches and waggons. Sheffield: Printed by J. Montgomery, in the Hartshead, for John Robinson, Spring-street, 1797 Preface The editor of the following sheets, conscious of the utility of a work of this nature, flatters himself that an apology for presenting them to the public is unnecessary: such publications, when compiled with care and accuracy, are of acknowledged use to the trading and commercial world. Fully imprest with this idea, he has spared no care or expence in order to attain the desired point, but, so fluctuating is trade, that he is aware of the impossibility of making a work of this nature absolutely perfect—the frequency of deaths, removals, partnerships commenced, others dissolved, which no penetration can forsee, or prudence prevent, renders it impossible to offer a work of this kind to the Public free from error. But he assures them that he has anxiously endeavoured to procure an authentic and correct list of the inhabitants &c. how far he may have succeeded in this, a candid and indulgent Public will judge, and their approbation will be gratefully felt by Their obedient Servant, JOHN ROBINSON. RichardB
Once transcribed we have the choice to make this the best online Directory, instead of just an unheard of one. Ours will be available sorted by Surname, Occupation, Address, Shoe size etc etc ... which is nice ... OK, I made the shoe size bit up ... Now we need something between 1797 and 1818/20 or even 1822.
