Even though I am aware of the long S, especially with this being a scan of old printing many of them are virtually indistinguishable from an F--I actually spent about ten minutes searching the web to try to find out what a cafe maker was! I'm in the midst of transcribing the 1787 directory (hope nobody else is doing it ) and after a while the 'f' for 's' begins to look normal. Here are a few that I picked out (linked names go to pages in Hallamshire Worthies): Rev. Joseph Evans, minister of the Upper Chapel in Norfolk-street, Porto-bello -- Radical, and, from 1787, the guardian of Joseph Hunter the famed Sheffield historian William Fairbank, land surveyor, West-hill -- we have scans of many of his maps and plans in our maps section James Montgomery, printer and publisher of the IRIS, or Sheffield Advertiser, 7 Hartshead Ann, & Elizabeth Gales, booksellers, and stationers, 7 Hartshead -- by the time of the directory Joseph Gales, publisher of the Sheffield Register, had fled to America to escape arrest. Ann & Elizabeth were his sisters. John Robinson, 51 Spring-street --author of the directory William Huntsman, (marks B. Huntsman), steel refiner, Attercliffe -- son of Benjamin Huntsman, developer of the crucible steel process that boosted the Sheffield steel industry. The address in Attercliffe is probably 26 Worksop Road, now the Britannia public house. Forum post on the Britannia John Curr, superintendant of the coal works of his Grace the Duke of Norfolk, Park -- Often credited as the first person to lay railway tracks made of iron. We should have a thread about him. Vincent Eyre, Esq, steward to his grace the Duke of Norfolk, 17 Far-gate -- the Duke's agent in Sheffield. His home was targeted by rioters in 1791. John Northall, printer, bookseller, and stationer, 10 King-street -- printer of the Sheffield Courant Walkers, Eyre & Stanley, bankers, 1 Norfolk-row -- business merged into the Sheffield and Rotherham Bank in 1836 James Wheat, attorney, master in chancery and deputy steward of the court baron, 7 Paradise-square -- Founder of the Wheat dynasty of solicitors, see this forum post. However, the directory itself never calls it Hollis Croft, instead there are entries for Hollis-street and Hollin-street. The author of the directory is fairly inconsistent with spelling (e.g. Heeley/Heely, Attercliffe/Attercliff), but in this case the two spellings sometimes appear on the same page. The 1781 directory has even more variants: Hollis’s croft Hollis croft Holli’s croft Hollis Street Holli croft Holles croft which leads me to two questions. Firstly, are these, as I have assumed, all just variant spellings of the name of the same street, or do they refer to more than one street? Secondly, does anyone know the origin of the name? It is Hollis croft on FB's 1771 plan of the town In the 1787 directory the spelling is consistently 'Holles'. (Few problems like its the correct number of rows deep, but 255 columns wide, instead of 5). Anyway, here's a .txt file, I right-clicked on it and selected "Open with" then choose Excel.
