Parkhurst Boys

These were boys who had been tried at Sheffield and sent to Parkhurst, Isle of Wight. After their rehabilitation they were deemed suitable for transportation to the Antipodes.

They were to help with the shortage of labour.

They were classed as ‘free’, ‘apprenticed’, and ‘ticket-of-leave’ boys.

Ship – Mandarin.

Isaac Walton, 16 years old. Tried 7/9/1843 and received 10 years for stealing bread.

William Harrope, 17 years old, tried 26/2/1846 and received 10 years for housebreaking.

I came across a link for these on the Sheffield records online site.

What i was looking for were any Sheffield people that sailed with the 'First Fleet' to Australia. My mates partner in Australia has two decendents that sailed with the 'First Fleet', just wondered if i could find any Sheffield connections. I have a list of the ships and even a list of all who sailed, but no details as to where they originally came from.

Anyone fancy looking ?

Dean.

Guest Gramps

Dean,

There's a web site here http://home.vicnet.net.au/~firstff/ but the link to 'People of the First Fleet' brings up a Powerpoint file and I've nothing to look at that with.

Thanks for the interesting list of Sheffield transportees - I hadn't realised transportation went on into the 1850s.

Hi Gramps, you should be able to find a Powerpoint viewer here. You don't need Powerpoint on your computer to use it, just need to know which version of Windows you're running and choose from the list.

http://www.pptfaq.com/FAQ00153.htm

Hope this helps. Tsavo.
