Guest Old Canny Street Kid
I have posted this under Snippets, but it might be worth repeating here. From The Star February 2nd 1954. It has been revealed that Sheffield United have made an offer for Sheffield Wednesday’s favourite Redfern Froggatt, but it is thought that the England international will not want to move across the city. (Footnote: Froggatt remained at Hillsborough, and within a few days United signed instead a forward called Jack Cross from Northampton. This prompted the joke to circulate in Sheffield that United couldn’t have Froggatt so they got Cross!)

hougomont
I'd seen it written both ways. Now we know it should be Redfern. The overiding memory I have of Redfern Froggatt was his wonderful ability to send out wonderful long passes straight to the feet of the winger,if you watch David Beckham do it it will give you some idea of the talents the this great Wednesday player

As you say, Red's dad was a big favourite with the Owls, and captained them to their 1926 promotion triumph. He was a centre-half, and he got a bit a raw deal when things didn't go too well in the early period of the following season. Yet I think Frank wanted his son to play for Wednesday and nobody else --which may be why Red never wanted to leave the club. Even when he fell out of favour, briefly, when Quixall and Sewell were made first choice inside forwards, and he asked for a transfer, Red had no real wish to go. Certainly there was never any danger that he would join United when they made a bid for him. I think for a long time he played on the wing during this phase, which made his scoring record all the more impressive. Red was certainly an excellent footballer. Incidentally, Redfern talked at length about his time at Hillsborough in the book Wednesday Every Day of the Week.
