Images of Sheffield’s Great War Soldiers.

Here with a list of images I have of Sheffield men who died or served in the Great War. Surnames M-Z

If you spot a relative in the list I am more than happy to pass on an image, contact me (Deansgirl) by PM please.

The quality of the images varies considerably, some excellent, some very poor, but in the main good enough. There are some 2,300 images.

Many thanks Dean. Nice bit of information. The second picture (the one from the Sheffield Year Book 1916) is the same as I have copied from the book "Three Centuries of Sheffield Steel" by Sidney Pollard 1954. In the book the photo is a full portrait of John Lockwood MARSH. I have added it below.

I was thrilled to see a picture of Shirley McTurk SPENCER. I remember when first starting my family tree I was looking for a woman!! Shirley, poor fella!

Thank you so much for the info and pictures Dean.

Hello there,

I was wondering if you could send pictures and their sources for my great great grandfather and one of his sons?

Wade. J.W. Served. Lincoln's.

Wade. Robert Samuel, Died. 13449 Lincoln's. Born Great Yarmouth.

I have the CWGC inscription for RS Wade and his headstone photo off of BRITISWARGRAVES.co.uk. I also have JW Wade's service and pension records if you are interested. JW Wade won the DCM and was taken POW in the Boer War before moving to Sheffield

Cheers

Pete

Hi Pete,

here's what i have -

Robert Samuel Wade.

Robert's image appears in the Thomas W. Wards memorial book for the Great War. There is a copy at Local Studies at Sheffield.

You have CWGC, this from SDGW - Born Gt. Yarmouth, enlisted at Lincoln, KIA. I suppose you have his MIC ? If not, British, Victory and 15 Star. Landed in France on 19/5/15.

From Tommy Wards memorial book -

" Son of Sergeant-Major Wade, enlisted from Tinsley Works in his fathers Regiment (the Lincolns ), on November 8th 1914, at the age of 19, and served with the B.E.F. Force in France. He was killed in action 26th September, 1917, when Company stretcher bearer, a shell bursting and killing the whole party. He was buried at Bridge House, near Ypres.

"The brave son of a brave father", his memory breathes the aspirations of the men who were banded together by the spirit of self-sacrifice, men grimly determined to suffer wounds and hardships and even death that for those who came after them the world might be a better place, and that humanity might never again be called upon to endure all the agony and heartbereak of this generation."

J.W. Wade -

Again from Tommy Wards -

"is the Nestor of our soldier lads. Before the war he repeatedly spoke of the reality of the German menace, and when the conflict came he had no illusions as to its duration and intensity. He was an ex-Colour Sergeant with a record of 21 years service behaind him. He was wounded at Nitrals Nek on July 11th, 1900, mentioned in Lord Robert's despatches September 4th 1901, and afterwards received the DCM. The Great War had lasted just two weeks when the old veteran decided that it was time to leave his post of Commissionaire at our Albion Offices and rejoin his old regiment, the 'Lincolns', as a private. The army authrities would not accept him at the outset, but on September 5th he was accepted and commenced duty at Lincoln. He was soon Company Sergeant Major, and for the duration of the war he remained at Lincoln doing his bit at home, whilst other members of his family were fighting and dying for their King and Country. Two of his sons were at Mons with the 1st Expeditionary Force, one was killed there, and the other was so severly wounded that he was afterwards discharged from the army. Our gallant Sergeant Major had three other sons in HM Forces, one was killed in action 1917, another was in France, 1914-1919, being wounded and gassed five times; the fifth son served as a Drummer at home. Segeant Major Wade's brother was killed in France soon after receiving his commission in 1914.

Sergeant Major Wade is back at his old post 'carrying on' in the vestibule of our Albion Offices, smart and soldierly, the embodiment of cheery optmism of the indomitable spirit which has always been characteristic of the British Army in every time of danger and disaster. The men of the Lincoln Regiment who were Prisoners of war will remember with gratitude his services as Secretary of the Relief Fund."

The Albion Offices still stand, in fact you should find an image of them on here.

His brother was Samuel Shoreen Arthur Wade i beleive, his MIC is on Ancestry with an address for his wife at 10A B??nand?

Road, Clapham Junction.

Hope this helps Pete,

regards

Dean.

Hi buffydonner, would your real name be Bert ?

I have sent this to someone already, his nephew, if not you here go's -

JOSEPH HAGUE

CWGC you must have.

SDGW have him as being born in the St Simon's parish of Sheffield. He enlisted at Sheffield. Died of wounds.

MIC - Victory, British and 15 Star.

Landed in France on 22/8/14.

In the remarks box it states he was accidentally killed.

This from the gentleman i have previously sent the image to -

'joined the army in 1904. In the Reserve at the outbreak of war, he was accidentally killed whilst instructing some new replacements in live hand grenade throwing, one other member of my family served in the Great War, my father, Harry Hague, served in the Army Service Corps throughout the war'. Bert.

hope this helps

Dean.

No, I'm not Bert, ha ha ha. Harry Hague who died December 1934 was my husband's great grandfather. Harry's daughter, Gertrude was married to Samuel Donner (my husband's grandfather) and Joseph was her brother. I'm just starting to research my husband's side of the family and haven't had the pleasure of conversing with Bert. Perhaps we can share some info.

Tremendous thanks for passing along the photo.

Images of Sheffield’s Great War Soldiers.

Here with a list of images I have of Sheffield men who died or served in the Great War. Surnames M-Z

If you spot a relative in the list I am more than happy to pass on an image, contact me (Trefcon - formerly known as Deansgirl) by PM please.

The quality of the images varies considerably, some excellent, some very poor, but in the main good enough. There are some 2,300 images.

Hi

I would like to see an image of LArrett Malyan if you have one?

He is my great grandfather.

Regards

Larrettline
