Sembly Greene

Recommended Posts

As well as paying rents to the Lord of the Manor of Sheffield, many also owed service, and had to attend an assembly on Sembly Greene, now known as The Wicker, on Easter Tuesday, along with a horse and harness.

In his survey of 1637, John Harrison listed those who had a duty to attend.

(The number following the name is the number of men and horses each had to provide. Names in [] denote differences betwen the 2 copies of the roll examined by Ronksley)

The names of all those Freeholders Copyholders and other Tennants of the Lords that in regards of their lands they owe their service, to appear with Horse and Harnesse at Sembley Greene on Easter Tuesday before the Lord of this Mannor of Sheffield, or the Steward of his Courts to bee viewed by them, and for the Comfirmeing of the Peace of our Soveraigne Lord the King.
