"Donor's father Edward James O'Brien was born in Salford in 1870. He was baptised at St. Johns Church, now Salford Roman Catholic Cathedral. Orphanned as a child, he went to Sheffield to live with an aunt, uncle and cousins. He married Elizabeth Gunning in Sheffield in 1898. In 1899 he joined the Lancashire Fusiliers and went to South Africa, seeing service at the Relief of Mafeking. After demobilisation, Edward and Elizabeth took a public house 'The Ball Inn', on 'The Wicker' in Sheffield. This was demolished many years ago."
