Guest Leipzig
A friend of mine has just received a death certificate for one of his ancestors, the date and place of death are given as: "Seventeenth of September 1844 in the Asylum attached to the Workhouse Sheffield". I am presuming that at this time the Sheffield Workhouse would have been located on Kelham Street, a former Mill building. Wadsley Park Village Online (Link) has an extract from: MIDDLEWOOD HOSPITAL SHEFFIELD A Brief History - 1872-1995 Souvenir Edition - "The Sheffield Union Workhouse in Kelham Street had a separate ward for the insane after 1865, as did the Ecclesall Workhouse built at Nether Edge." The two sources do not see to agree as to when the Asylum existed at the Workhouse - can anyone clarify the facts for me please. HughW
From the Sheffield Local Register: 9 Jul 1839 Rotherham Sessions: License for a lunatic asylum in the Workhouse of Sheffield refused; application to be renewed at Pontefract sessions. [The renewed application was not recorded in this digest but no doubt was covered by the newspapers.] 26 Jan 1846 Commissioners of Lunacy visit Shellled workhouse, and report favourably of the wards for the insane. 3 Dec 1846 Proposal to let the Brightside Workhouse for a lunatic asylum, rejected by the ratepayers. * Hugh
