Old Sheffield Scene

Picking up on Dunsbyowl's other thread on Sheffield scenes by Sheffield artists, - this is one of my favourites.

The painting, by R.R. Pickford dates from around 1879, is of a house where another famous Sheffield artist lived for a while.

Where is/was it and who was the artist who lived there ?

Hi Gramps

Is it in Highfield?

Indeed it is - Highfield Cottage in fact which was for a while the home of Geoffrey Sykes. The wagon in the distance has just turned out of Sharrow lane onto London road heading towards town. Above the roof of the cottage can be seen the gables and chimneys of Highfield House and behind the cottage is another row of cottages known as the 'Iron Railings'. It was all lost to road widening not long after this picture was painted, although it is said the iron railings were moved to the raised footway under Heeley railway bridge. Perhaps they still survive ?
