Guest Leipzig
The book History of Upper Chapel, Sheffield, founded 1662, has just appeared on the Internet Archive site, available to download. As well as the history of the chapel it also contains a register of baptisms. http://www.archive.org/details/historyofupperch00mann

Guest Gramps
Thank you, interesting reading. It gives an insight to how they lived in those days and the names of certain addsesses like " Pepper Alley " A little piece of Pepper Alley can still be seen through the bars of the gates on the right hand side of the chapel. I had a nosey up there one day in the summer and there's a memorial, probably a gravestone, set into the wall of a woman buried in the grounds of the chapel who was born in 1654 ! Unfortunately I had neither pen, paper nor camera with me. The upper chapel is claimed to be the first 'public' building built of brick in Sheffield (1700). The original entrance was on the Fargate end of the building, but was later moved to Norfolk street when a stone portico was added.
