Heavy Penalties for Cock Fighting

April 1876

Sheffield man Samuel Johnston (Screwmaker) together with 2 Barnsley men were charged with cock fighting

Quote

"Johnston, who was stripped and was kneeling down,had a game cock in his hand. Croft also had a cock in his hand"

Boiler explosion at the cutlery manufacturer George Hides, many injured and 1 boy subsequently died

West Riding Quarter Sessions Doncaster

1864

After the Grand Jury was sworn one appeal was proceeded with

Charles Shelton versus The Justice of Sheffield

He only wanted a license to run the Black Bull Hollis Croft

Railway Pressure

600 labourers were discharged by the Manchester Sheffield Lincolnshire Railway due to shortage of funds, although the viaduct over the Wicker is to continue

Field for Religious Liberality

The populous of Hollis Croft in a state of Great Spiritual Destitution,

man gives £200 towards the building of a church

Sheffield School of Design

Has moved to Arundel St

Church Missionary Jubilee

Has been commemorated in Sheffield

Police Commissioners Meeting

This covered a low chimney in Suffolk Rd and to pay the Police Superintendant his expenses of £150 for the month (not bad for 1848, hope he kept his receipts)

And so the cut and thrust of life of 1848 Sheffield continued

The School in PeaCroft was destroyed by fire, The treasurer had failed to pay the insurance.
