Stuart0742 Posted November 17, 2008 Share Posted November 17, 2008 A bit of a Potted History Housed in a building which in part dates from the 17th century, the Cross Scythes was opened as a pub in about 1818 by Samuel Hopkinson, a local farmer and scythe maker, to serve traffic on the new Baslow to Greenhill turnpike. The licence changed hands initially almost every ten years; 1836 Thomas Fisher; 1846 John Thorpe (who changed its name to Ye Old Cross Scythes"); 1856 John Wagstaff; ???? Job Green; 1868 Thomas Brown; 1891 Thomas Brown; 1893 Joseph North ???? Matt Sheppard; 1896 James William Marples; 1911 George Reeves; 1948 Joseph Fearnley; 1951 William Edwards. To the left of the house when facing the front there was stable accommodation; to the right an adjoining building (since demolished) housed a smithy. Being situated 6 miles from Sheffield and Baslow, the pub was also known as �€�Halfway House�€� to the coaches running on the Sheffield, Bakewell and Buxton route. In 1885 a horse bus service was started between here and Dore and Totley Station by Michael Cottam, a carting contractor from Grimesthorpe. This ran until 1896 when the then licensee James Marples won a contract from the Midland Railway to provide a regular bus service; he had to provide both carriages and a small bus. This horse drawn service remained in operation until ' 1911, when George Reeves introduced a motorised bus, a single deck Commer with solid wheels. George Reeves was my Grandfather's brother.
