Guest italy
Hello everyone. Does anyone know anything about Carbrook in the early 1900's. I have two families in mind, one named Dodson, they had a large number of children, even for that era. Here are a few names, Rebecca known as Doris (she married Levi Marsden around 1926) Sam, Evelyn, Edith, Lucy, Tom, Hannah (I think this little girl died in the flu epidemic) she was one of a twin but the other one didn't live to be very old either. There were others but I only know the ones mentioned apart from Hannah. Their father, I believe had a coal delivery business until had damaged his foot and had to give it up. The other family is Leedham, and their children were, Fred, Martha, Evelyn, Horace. I'm intrigued to find out more if possible.
HughW
hello Italy, Welcome to SheffieldHistory! I am sure you will have a great time here but you may have to dispense with Real Life DODSON seems to be a fairly rare name in Sheffield. For most of the following names there was only one possible entry (but to be certain they are all siblings you would need to verify them with certificates). But the appearance of the same given names amongst the children makes it more likely that Samuel and Lucy are indeed the parents. Hugh
HughW
Possible entries in the death index for three of the children: GRO Deaths JUN Qtr 1914 DODSON Rose 0y Sheffield 9c 796 JUN Qtr 1919 DODSON Hannah 6 Sheffield 9c 626 JUN Qtr 1923 DODSON Walter 0y Sheffield 9c 731 Hannah's death, if it was due to influenze, was later than the peak of the epidemic which, in Sheffield, occurred the previous Autumn, around the time of the Armistice (in fact it must be the 90th anniversary of the epidemic just about now - something to think about when remembering the war dead this week). HughW
Found them - a poor image Samuel (Saml) has been indexed at Ancestry as 'James KADISON'. The address is 11 Swan Street. Both Swan St and Fell Road are on Map 176 Hugh

I'm sure you are right, Samuel and Lucy are the parents, my grand parents, although I never knew my grandfather at all, my grandmother left Sheffield when I was six years old, turned up in Sheffield when I was seventeen (no contact during this time) having walked or hitched (so the police told my mother) from Doncaster carrying a three legged stool. She was taken straight to the City General, as it was then, had a stroke and died. I'm sure you didn't want to know all that but bearing in mind her age it is amazing, she must have been in her late seventies by my reckoning. Rebecca, my mother, said both grandparents came from Ponteland. Thomas, on your 1901 census is/was Samuels brother, so you found another branch of the family. As soon as I saw the name Southwick I remembered my mother mentioning it, but without your help I would never have thought of it. Sooooooo lots to do now, many thanks. HughW
No need to apologize for telling the story of your grandmother - although it is a sad story it makes it real, rather than a collection of names from obscure documents. I had forgotten the second part of the question, about the LEEDHAM family. Are they connected to the DODSONs? Hugh
HughW
If the LEEDHAMs are also a Carbrook family, this might be them in 1901: 1901 census piece 4382 folio 18 page 28 11 Southern Road (Attercliffe; Ecclesiastical District: Carbrook) Herbert LEEDHAM Head Marr 30 fitters labourer Sheffield Emma Wife Marr 29 Carbrook Ernest Fred Son 6 Carbrook Lizzie Louisa Dau 9 Carbrook George FOX Boarder 40 bricklayers labourer Ecclesall (there is also a visitor called Mary Ann SCOTT aged 18 who may be part of this household) I think this is the marriage of this couple: GRO Marriages SEP Qtr 1893 LEEDHAM Herbert Sheffield 9c 537 RICHARDS Emma Sheffield 9c 537 .. and after 1911 there is this birth: GRO Births SEP Qtr 1915 LEEDHAM Eveline E (mmn: RICHARDS) Sheffield 9c 1273 In addition, Ernest Fred in 1901 could be Fred in your list. You say that Samuel Dodson is indexed in Ancestry as James Kadison. I don't undertand what that means or why anyone would want to do it. Please can you help? I am sorry to be a pain, I am very new at this and have much to learn.
HughW
The registration of stillborns was not introduced until 1927. If a child lived for any length of time their birth and death should have been registered. 'James Kadison' is a mis-transcription by someone who failed to get to grips with a poor image of the census page. There are many such errors in the Ancestry databases though few are as wildly wrong as that one. Knowing this you have to try various combinations of the facts you know or can guess about an individual in order to find them. This is the name interpreted as James Kadison Hugh
