Sheffield Flood, General view of ruins at Malin Bridge Village, Hillsborough, Remains of Cleakum Inn/Malin Bridge Inn, left, Site of Stag Inn and Turner Wheel, foreground. March 1864.

Photographer Laurence Frederick Peacock. s00891.jpg.0c2b96fd7f8b91c78fba7890b243255d.jpgs00891

Information from Malcolm Nunn, Bradfield Parish Council Archivist. This is an image used in slide lectures/ magic lantern shows by photographer Mr. Peacock. His notes to accompany the lectures also included some of his experiences while taking the photograph. The morning after the flood, a great open space met the eye, where a previous day a properous village was seen, the space was deep in mud and dotted all over with wrecks of houses; furniture; mattreees; machinery; trees; large stones; barrels of beer; carcasses of dead horses, cows, sheep and pigs; roofs of houses; lumps of brick walling and almost every conceivable kind of wreck. Here a perambulator, there a dresser; yonder a horse; then a wagon upside down with a wheel short. Dead bodies were dug out of the mud by two's, three's and half dozens at a time, mostly disfigured and mutilated almost beyond recognition for you must remember everyone was in bed when the flood came and the night clothes were mostly torn off the bodies therefore when the features were disfigured and the bodies naked it was a most difficult matter to identify the person. This accounts for so many bodies never having been found or rather not identified. From one house a family of 12 persons named Spencer lost their lives.
