Guest skeets
Anyone remember the penny dips at the Pork Shops, l used to buy mine at the shop bottom of Crookes ,when l came out of Broomhill School in the Thirties. iI you told the butcher you only had a half penny, he would make a full one and cut it in half, knowing another lad would be in for the other half penny in a few minutes , these dips consisted of a bread cake [nearly twice the size one buys these days] dipped in the juices and dripping from the large leg of pork that was on the counter every day, if you asked he would include a piece of crackling, sometime Mum would ask me to bring her a quarter of pork with crackling [that was 5 pence] l knew then some visitor was coming to visit , what Happy but frugal days Skeets. RichardB
I'm feeling a need to generate a listing of all Pork butchers (obviously Victorian/Edwardian); Funk's of Hillsborough - is it still there ? Bottom of Dykes Hall Road, but formerly of Holme Lane. Oh God, RichardB's going off on one again; Tsavo HIDE !!!!!
