This was a violent game, resulting in several broken shins. Norton proved the winners. Violence then broke out between supporters resulting in a pitched battle, in which the Sheffield supporters came off worst. Some of the Sheffield supporters summoned help, and reinforcements arrived armed with stakes taken from nearby hedges, and the Norton supporters were badly beaten. Some escaped into Ecclesall Woods, where they spent the night before making their way home the following day. Date: 1768! Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
